# Roster

> See every rank and member in your department, and manage ranks, roles and membership requests.

## What is the Roster?

The Roster is your department's chain of command. Ranks are listed from highest to lowest, with each member placed in their rank.

Every member can view the Roster. What you can change depends on your [permissions](/Department/permissions), and you can only act on members ranked below you.

## Reading the Roster

Every member has exactly one rank, and can also hold any number of [roles](#roles). Column order and visibility are set in [Roster Settings](/Department/settings/roster), where you can also add custom columns for things like callsigns or certifications.

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Columns">
    | Column | What it shows |
    | - | - |
    | User | Avatar (with a dot when on shift or on break), name and role badges. |
    | Activity | Online time this activity wave, and whether they've met their quota. A yellow flag means they've been marked inactive. |
    | Member Since | How long ago they joined the department. |
    | Points | Active infraction points and standing. Only shown with Infractions Administrator. |
    | Custom columns | Text, checkbox, date, time or time spent in a shift type. |

    A calendar icon on a row means the member is on a [Leave of Absence](/Department/loa).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Standing">
    | Standing | Meaning |
    | - | - |
    | Great | No active points. |
    | Good | Has points, but hasn't reached a suspension or termination stage. |
    | Suspension | Has reached a suspension stage in your [points system](/Department/infraction/settings#points-system). |
    | Pending Termination | Has reached the termination stage. |
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Filters and Search">
    Click **Filter** to narrow the roster by Activity, Status (online, on break, offline), Standing or Roles. Click the Active or Inactive count in the toolbar to filter by it.

    Press `Ctrl` + `F` (`⌘` + `F` on Mac) to search by name. While a filter or search is active, you can't drag members or reorder ranks.
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

Click a member to expand their row. Depending on your permissions, you'll see their roles, quota progress, recent shifts, active LOA, suspension and infraction history, with buttons to manage each.

## Member Actions

Right-click a member to see what you can do. Only actions you're allowed to use appear.

| Action | What it does | Permission |
| - | - | - |
| View Discord Profile | Shows their Discord roles and join dates. | Anyone |
| Promote / Demote | Starts a [promotion or demotion](/Department/roster/promotions). | Promote / Demote |
| Infract, Suspend, Terminate | Punishes the member. See [Infractions](/Department/infraction/members). | Infractions Administrator |
| Roles | Tick or untick department roles. | Manage Members |
| Apply/Remove Roles | Adds or removes roles in bulk. | Manage Members |

With Manage Members, you can also tick the checkbox next to several members (or a whole rank) and use **Perform action** to act on all of them at once. You can also click a custom column cell to edit it.

### Moving Members

Drag a member to reorder them within a rank, or drop them into another rank to change their rank. This needs Manage Members. Only Administrators can drop members into any rank; everyone else can only use ranks below their own.

<Warning>
  Dragging is a quiet move. It updates linked Discord roles but sends no DM, shout or log. Use a [promotion or demotion](/Department/roster/promotions) to announce a rank change.
</Warning>

### Removing Members

To remove someone, terminate them. Members are also removed automatically if they lose their linked rank role in Discord, or leave your Discord server while [Discord Autokick](/Department/settings/general#discord-autokick) is on.

***

## Roles

Roles group members and grant extra permissions on top of their rank. Manage them under Department Roles in [Roster Settings](/Department/settings/roster), or click **Roster admin**, then **Create Role**.

Creating roles needs Administrator. Giving roles to members needs Manage Members. You can have up to 20 roles, and roles linked to a Discord role are assigned automatically, so you can't tick them by hand.

***

## Review Membership Requests

People who use your [join link or code](/Department/settings/general#join-code) send a request you need to accept. Click the **requests** button above the roster to review them. This needs Manage Members.

<Frame caption="Member Requests">
  <img className="block" src="https://mintcdn.com/melonly/q2rOUZFah4X4li-3/images/Departments/Roster/requests.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=q2rOUZFah4X4li-3&q=85&s=2244508e668c62f858ad48f1627129a6" alt="The Member Requests page with pending requests, their Accept and Deny buttons, plus Accept all and Deny all" style={{ borderRadius: '0.75rem' }} width="1918" height="989" data-path="images/Departments/Roster/requests.png" />
</Frame>

Accept or deny each request, or use **Accept all** and **Deny all**. Accepted members join the highest rank whose linked Discord role they hold, or the lowest rank otherwise.

Some people skip the queue and join straight away, see [Joining a Department](/Department/joining#what-happens-when-you-join).
